What the question is asking
Item 3 asks whether you have considered yourself part of a romantic relationship. The checklist sets no minimum duration, no requirement that the relationship was public, and no requirement that it ended well or at all. A three-week relationship at sixteen counts the same as a decade-long marriage: both are one point.
Where people disagree about what counts
The live disagreement is about situationships and relationships that were never explicitly named. Because the checklist supplies no definition, takers split roughly into two camps: those who require that both people had actually agreed they were together, and those who check the box for any sustained, mutually romantic arrangement. Neither reading is more correct; the item is self-assessed.
The test is self-scored and nobody else ever sees your answer, so the only thing that matters is applying one reading consistently across the whole checklist.
How item 3 fits with the items around it
Item 3 closes the opening social trio. The checklist then jumps to physical items from 4 onward and does not return to the emotional side of relationships until items 61 to 65, which cover being in love, heartbreak, and infidelity. Those later items are, in effect, the second half of item 3.
How it affects the score
Every question has the same one-point effect. Checking item 3 subtracts one point from the starting score of 100. Leaving it unchecked subtracts nothing, and no item on the checklist is weighted more heavily than any other.
